Experience

  • Jul 2025Aug 2026

    Darwinbox, Core Engineering

    Hyderabad, India

    • Drove the multi-phase migration of the audit trail system to a dedicated microservice across 65+ entity models over three releases, with no disruption to production audit coverage.
    • Refactored the location provisioning pipeline from a scheduled CRON job to real-time, event-driven creation, removing a bottleneck that implementation teams hit on every rollout.
    • Contributed to the design and delivery of Effective Date History, enabling point-in-time snapshots of employee data.
    • Designed and delivered an automated Template Permission Role system for tenant-level HR access control across organisational hierarchies.
    • Diagnosed and resolved defects across the bulk data import modules for employee and organisational record ingestion.
    • Implemented Multi-Language Framework support to close gaps in i18n coverage for multilingual enterprise deployments.

    Darwinbox

    Hyderabad, India

    • Built a simulation framework in Next.js for custom automation workflows, so teams could preview workflow behaviour against production-equivalent configuration before going live.

Halflife

A free flashcard app with two schedulers: Anki's SM-2 formula and a half-life regression model trained on 12.85 million Duolingo reviews. Every review records what both would do, and the model takes over only when it wins on real data.

Predicting optical scattering in heart tissue

Light in the near-infrared band scatters as it passes through heart muscle, and how much it scatters says something about the tissue. Measuring that directly is expensive, so we generated scattering values from an analytical tissue model and trained four regression models to predict them at wavelengths that had not been measured. A small study; the point was to test whether machine learning can stand in for the measurement.

Leveraging Deep Learning for Automatic Feature Extraction in Microarray Analysis

Classifying five cancer types from gene expression data, where there are far more genes than samples and deep learning overfits on its own. Selecting features first and then training a neural ensemble worked well. The same data fed straight into image-style deep networks barely beat guessing.

About

I am Adi Vishnu Avula, a software engineer from Hyderabad. For the last year and a half I worked at Darwinbox, most of it in the Core Engineering team, on the systems underneath an enterprise HR platform: audit trails, permissions, provisioning pipelines, localisation. Before that I finished a Computer Science degree at SRM University AP with a gold medal.

I like problems where correctness is the feature: a ledger that has to balance, or an import that must not write the same record twice. On the side I build tools I use myself: Halflife, a flashcard app with a trained scheduler, and MF Compass. I also co-authored a Springer chapter on predicting optical scattering in heart tissue with machine learning.

Outside work: personal finance spreadsheets, and games that end at 2am.
